Stephanie Nickens has worked in the beauty industry for over 10 years, and has filled the role of Area Manager USA in New York City since 2015. While working with us, she’s recorded exclusive make-up tutorials and most recently helped open our 11th store in the US at historic Grand Central Station. Stephanie understands and embraces our philosophy, so we’re very pleased to have her as a contributor at Rituals Magazine—to get to know her better and to share her beauty advice with our fans.

You’ve worked in the beauty industry for over 10 years. What attracted you to this field when were you certain you wanted to dedicate yourself to it?

I stumbled upon the beauty industry. I always played with makeup as a child, and did make up for friends in college. I never took it too seriously until I was approached for a job for a well-known brand after graduation. Since then, I have had the pleasure of working New York Fashion Week, facilitated make-up classes, worked with celebrities backstage and had the awesome pleasure to serve as Rituals Beauty Expert. I love the industry because you can truly bring out one’s inner beauty by enhancing their outer beauty. Something as simple as a lipstick can transform someone’s mood.

Can you tell us a little bit about how you discovered Rituals and what made you interested in joining its ranks?

I joined the Rituals team because I truly believed in the philosophy. Taking everyday routines and turning them into meaningful Rituals resonates with me and is definitely something the US can benefit from. Living and working in the heart of NYC, I see the need for people to “enjoy the moment.” I wanted to take my experience in the beauty and retail industry and unite it with Rituals to make a huge impact in the US. Being a part of expanding the Rituals brand is a huge honor, but also a huge undertaking. I enjoy the successes and the challenges as we grow each day.

You recently made some video tutorials for Rituals using our new Ritual of Cleopatra collection. What are your favourite products from the line and why?

That’s so hard, because I am in love with so many of our new products! To narrow it down to my favorites, I love the Sunglow Peach and Pink Brown; they are the perfect was to add radiance to the skin. You can even use them on the eyes to create a soft highlight on the eyelids and brow bone. I also love the new lipstick shades and textures, they are just in time for the Spring/Summer and wear all day. There’s a lip color for everyone and any occasion.

If you could impart only one piece of advice to women wanting to perfect their make-up look, what would it be and why?

Learn your features and what compliments them best. In this YouTube era, there are a lot of techniques being shared for a specific person’s face shape, skin-tone, etc. Every product, shade or technique doesn’t work the same for everyone, however. Learn your eye shape, face shape and the colors that enhance your natural features. This can come with trial, error and a little practice. Also, don’t be afraid to try something new…you can surprise yourself!
