Everybody wants to be happy—but how can we best achieve this? It is easy to assume that certain things lead to happiness: a good relationship with your partner, a pleasant work environment, a higher income. But this is not necessarily true. People from all walks of life and in all sorts of circumstances describe themselves as happy, even when the aforementioned elements aren’t present. How is this possible? What do all happy people have in common? The answer lies in how they approach things in their daily lives. Namely, they all have a positive attitude.

What follows are ten ways to be positive and therefore invite more happiness into your life.

1. Live in the moment as much as possible.

Acknowledge that you can’t change the past and you have only a limited control over the future. Living in the hear and now will help you let go of regrets from the past and worries about the future.

2. Realise that comparing yourself to others is pointless.

In the age of social media, we are inundated with images of our friends and family leading wonderful, exciting lives. But showing your best side on Facebook or Instagram is easy, and comparing your everday life to what people decide to post only leads to negativity.

3. Embrace change.

Whether it comes from outside or from within, change is the only true constant in life. When we are in a rut, we often experience negative feelings.

4. Risk failure and learn from it when it occurs.

The most sucessful people in the world report failing many times before finally achieving their goals. Prior to Microsoft, Bill Gates founded a business called Traf-O-Data that was an unequivocal failure. Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” Basketball legend Michael Jordan puts a positive spin on failure, saying, “On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

5. Choose how you react to bad situations.

We can’t always control our circumstances. But we can control our reaction to them. Although it  sounds cliché, it is helpful to take a breath, count to ten and try to react to news in a more positive manner.

6. Socialise exclusively with positive people.

While it is impossible to avoid all negative influences, try to spend your free time with optimistic people. It’s easier to be positive when you’re surrounded by like-minded people.

7. Eat healthy.

Various scientific studies have determined that diets high in fat and sugar lead to depression. While treating yourself  to the occasional cookie can lift you out of a dip, try to eat well on a daily basis.

8. Volunteer your time.

Even in our darkest days, there is always somebody who is going through something worse. Rather than wallowing in your own problems, offer to help somebody who is less fortunate.

9. Show gratitude.

Express this not only in words, but also in actions. Let people know you are thankful for their presence in your life.

10. Give yourself a break.

No matter how harried or over-scheduled you are, be sure to award yourself a few minutes of something you love every day. This gives you something to look forward to and helps you maintain a positive attiude even when times are tough.

By making these ten tips a habit, a positive attitude is sure to follow. When we incorporate rituals of positivity in our lives, happiness is a welcome side effect.
