Now that the holiday season has started, it’s time to start thinking about the perfect gift for your loved ones. Their wish list may consist of the latest gadget, a pair of gloves or their favourite Rituals product, but there is one holiday gift no one ever asks for but everyone needs: the gift of kindness and compassion.

In our modern world, material things are in abundance and easy to come by. However, in the busyness of day to day life, we tend to run low on attention for the people around us. Instead of starting off the holiday season with an extensive gift shopping spree, take a moment to be mindful about the people around you first. Don’t think about what perfect gift you can find for them, but think about the things they’ve done for you, the impact they’ve had on your life and what you can do for them.

Being kind and compassionate is more than a friendly gesture. Studies have discovered that happiness is related to how much gratitude you show. Being compassionate to others does not only make the receiver feel good, but also contributes to the happiness of the giver. Kindness inspires joy, faith in humanity and encourages others to be kind as well. A true act of kindness, whether it’s for a loved one or a total stranger, is the gift that keeps on giving.

So pledge this Christmas to express your generosity and gratuity through your actions too. Tell your loved ones how grateful you are for their love, give them a well-meant compliment or a helping hand. After all, the greatest gift you can give doesn’t have to come with a price tag. It simply needs to come from the heart.
